Star Trek rifle, toted by Capt. Kirk, gets $231K
A one-of-its-kind rifle that actor William Shatner once toted around while filming the Star Trek series has fetched a whopping $231,000 at an auction.
The rifle was shown in the sci-fi entertainment franchise Star Trek series in 1960s in which Shatner played the famous character of Captain Kirk.
The winning bid for the rifle, used in the second pilot episode for the series, came in well over the auction house’s $50,000 to $70,000 estimate, CNN reported.
According to Julien’s Auctions, inventor Reuben Klamer created the weapon after NBC asked that the Star Trek pilot be “retooled for a more action-packed adventure.” Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry “asked for a really big gun,” the auction house said. Klamer then got the rifle back while Shatner, as Kirk, got a more familiar pistol used for the rest of the next three seasons, the report said.
The Star Trek showpiece was one of many iconic items of Hollywood history that were part of the Julien’s auction.
Other big-ticket items that went under the hammer include a Munchkins flower plot from The Wizard of Oz that sold for $15,000, a flying suit worn by Christopher Reeve in Superman IV that fetched $25,000.
A nightshirt belonging to famous American actress, model, and singer, Marilyn Monroe also went for sale for $15,000.
