Thatcher suits fetch £73,125
Seven outfits worn by former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher were on Monday auctioned for more than 10 times their estimated price of £1,000-£1,500 and madea combined £73,125 in the London Sale auction by Christie’s.
Eighty-six-year-old Lady Thatcher had worn these suits during early part of her career. Lady Thatcher, who was Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, is suffering from dementia and is rarely seen in public these days. Her husband Denis Thatcher died of pancreatic cancer in 2003.
“The highest individual price was achieved for a jade green wool suit comprising a dress and jacket by British designer Mansfield which was worn on a number of occasions by Lady Thatcher, most notably on the day she was confirmed as Conservative Party leader in February 1975. It sold for £25,000 to an anonymous bidder in the sale room in London,” Christie’s said.
All the seven outfits had been worn by Lady Thatcher before she became the Prime Minister. Not many Thatcher-related items appear on the auction circuit in Britain.
