William, Kate to visit Canada as a ‘couple’
Prince William and Kate Middleton will be travelling to Canada this summer for their first official trip as a married couple.
An official from Canada said late on Tuesday the newly-weds will travel across the country from the end of June to mid-July. The two will take part in Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa on July 1. Their stay will also include a trip to the Arctic. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak about it publicly.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper invited the couple to Canada after they announced their engagement in November 2010. Canada is also issuing stamps in their honour.
Their wedding is on April 29 at Westminster Abbey. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state in Canada, a member of the British Commonwealth of former colonies. The 84-year-old monarch visited Canada in July 2010 and pronounced it “good to be home” as she embarked on her 22nd official visit to the country. She also visited Ottawa for the country’s birthday.
Though Canadians are somewhat indifferent to the monarchy, most have great affection for the Queen, whose silhouette marks their coins.
