Chennai issues more visas to foreigners on arrival
Chennai: Chennai continues to retain the third rank in issuing the maximum number of visas to foreign nationals during January-August this year.
Though the national capital New Delhi and Mumbai had issued more visas to foreigners compared to other metros, Chennai too had given a number of visas. During January to August 2013, the highest number of VoAs were issued at New Delhi (6,906) followed by Mumbai (2,549), Chennai (1,832), Kolkata (846), Bengaluru (17), Hyderabad (12), Kochi (10) and Thiruvananthapuram (4).
A total number of 12,176 VoAs have been issued during this period as compared to 9,412 VoAs during the same period last year in India. Most of those visiting Chennai came either for medical treatment or to attend international conferences. Others came to explore various destinations or go on a heritage trail, besides undergoing Ayurveda treatment. Chennai had received about 2,273 visitors in 2012.
The visas are provided to foreigners if their sole objective of visiting India is for recreation, sight seeing, casual visit to meet friends or relatives, short duration medical treatment or casual business visit etc.
Overall, the country had recorded a growth of 29.4 per cent in the number of tourists availing the tourist Visa on Arrival (VoA) during January to August 2013.
As a measure to attract more foreign tourists to India, Government launched the VoA scheme in January 2010 for citizens of five countries - Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore –visiting India for tourism purposes. The scheme was extended to the citizens of six more countries - Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos and Myanmar in January 2011.
