Hindustan launch women’s team
Hindustan FC, one of the capital’s top football club, has become the only I-League side among the first and second division clubs to have a women’s team.
Unveiling the women’s team jersey on Wednesday here, Hindustan FC president Sushil Pandit said that the decision to launch the team was in line with the club’s philosophy to support women’s football.
“Delhi Soccer Association is looking to kickstart its women’s league and Hindustan FC would not want to be left behind,” Pandit said.
There is hardly any club-level women’s football tournament in the country but Pandit said things may change soon and his club could groom players to represent the country.
However, Hindustan FC will have to get its women’s team registered with the DSA.
“We have applied for registration and the DSA managing committee will take a decision in its meeting to be held soon,” Hindustan FC director D.K. Bose said.
If registered, Hindustan FC will become the sixth such team under DSA.
The Hindustan FC women’s team will be led by Indian Under-19 international Neha Kapoor and has some national-level players, including Kuhelika Guha, who attended an India camp in 2009.
