Modi defiant, says hold on

New Delhi , April 21: Plans to oust Lalit Modi may be in the final stages as far as the Board of Control for Cricket in India is concerned, but the IPL commissioner has been digging up some clauses that have the potential to a throw a spanner in the works.
Instead of gathering support for the IPL governing council meeting scheduled in Mumbai for April 26, where his future as the league’s boss will be put to a vote, Mr Modi has changed tack, now calling the meeting “unauthorised”.
The meeting had been convened by BCCI secretary and Chennai Super Kings owner N. Srinivsan, a Modi detractor for long. The latter, however, cited the rule book, saying that as the council chairman only he had the right to summon such a meeting.

Bihar’s Raj-era ‘chowkidari’ ruled illegal

New Delhi , April 21: In an interesting judgment, the Supreme Court has declared the British-era hereditary “chowkidari” system in villages as “illegal”, and approved the Nitish Kumar government’s innovative decision to put in place a modern framework for their appointment in Bihar.
The order, delivered by a bench comprising Justices R.V. Raveendran, R.M. Lodha and Deepak Verma, pointed out that the centuries-old chowkidari system gave right to the heir of a chowkidar to be appointed in his place on his death, or being nominated by him.

At school, kids made to walk on coal, glass

Ahmedabad , April 21: In a bizarre incident in Surat, south Gujarat, around 120 students between the ages of 10 and 14 were forced to walk barefoot over burning coals and broken glass at a school in an exercise aimed to help them “gain confidence” and overcome fear as part of “personality development”.

Taxmen survey offices of some IPL franchisees

New Delhi/Mumbai/Chennai/Kolkata , April 21: The income-tax department on Wednesday carried out surveys at the offices of IPL franchisees and broadcasters of the tournament.
Income-tax officials also questioned IPL commissioner Lalit Modi for the second time to learn how the broadcasting rights for IPL were given. Also, acting on the complaint of the Registrar of Companies (RoC), a local court in Chandigarh issued notices to the Kings XI Punjab co-owners, including Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia and Mohit Burman, for not filing balance sheets and annual returns.
