Doctors may be required to re-register periodically

 

New Delhi ,March 7: The Centre is contemplating an amendment of the Indian Medical Council Act 1956 to make it mandatory for all doctors in the country to periodically renew their registration.
This is being done to check the incidence of fraudulent medical practitioners and also to routinely update the Indian Medical Register (IMR), which continues to carry the names of medical practitioners who are either long dead or have left the country. There are more than seven lakh names registered in the IMR. Sources in the health ministry said the Medical Council of India (MCI) would get additional funds to update the IMR on a regular basis.
