100 sailors to compete in India International Regatta
Over 100 sailors from 10 countries would compete for honours in the India International Regatta (IIR) slated to be held from October 2 to 9.
Sailors from Ireland, Malaysia, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Myanmar and Indonesia, besides India, have confirmed participation in the week-long event with women constituting one fourth of the fleet taking on the challenges under demanding monsoon conditions.
The international event being held at the Bay of Bengal for the third year in succession is partly funded by government of India and Tamil Nadu government.
The event will be inaugurated by Admiral Nirmal Verma, Chief of Naval Staff, who is also the president of the Yachting Association of India.
The regatta will be held in two youth racing classes — single handed Optimist dinghy for the sub junior sailors and the exciting faster-than-wind ‘29er’ for adolescent sailors, who have grown out of the Optimist.
A series of 12 races in each of the classes will be held off the Chennai harbour, outside the shipping lanes, Commodore of the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association, the organising Club, Ashok Thakkar said.
