Age no barrier for 96-yr-old Mann
The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon will witness its oldest runner in action, when the 96-year old Mann Kaur will throng the Delhi streets come September 30. Kaur, who belongs to Chandigarh, took up racing at the insistence of his son Gurdev Singh, who resides in Canada. The 75-year Gurdev is also a runner and encouraged his mother to train and take up running.
Kaur will compete with many others in the 2012 edition, in an effort to demonstrate that age is no bar and barriers exist only in the mind.
The 96-year old Kaur recently won a gold medal each in the 100 metre and 200 metre categories at the world masters athletic championship in Sacramento, USA, through the Masters Athletic Federation of India. She is also known called the ‘Golden Girl of India’.
Said Mann about her participation in the ADHM, “I feel privileged to have represented India at the world masters athletic championship. This year, my son and I are participating in the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and I am really excited. It’s a message for all the people around — Have Feet, Will Run, Have Will, Will Triumph!”
Added son Gurdev, “In 2008, I went to Canada for the world masters Championship where I saw a participant named Olga who was aged 90. It was then that I convinced my mother to take up athletics as I knew her fitness levels.”
Rs 4 crore expected to be raised
The 2012 edition of the event is targetting an increase of nearly crore of rupees for charity. “Last year, the event had helped raise `3.30 crores,” said an official. “We are expecting an increase this year.”
