Amit, Bajrang return to rapturous welcome

Medal-winning wrestlers Amit Kumar Dahiya and Bajrang on Friday returned home from Budapest to a hero’s welcome with hundreds of fans and well-wishers turning up at the international airport to receive the champions.

At the world championships, Amit had bagged a silver medal in the 55kg freestyle category, while Bajrang claimed a bronze in the 60kg category.
Even before the wrestlers had landed, Terminal 3 of IGI Airport was crowded with supporters and young grapplers from nearby akhadas who waited with garlands, bouquets and sweets, and danced to deafening drum beats.
And as Amit and Bajrang came out of the airport, a huge roar welcomed them as shouts of ‘Amit, Bajrang ki jay’ reverberated in the air.
Speaking to the waiting media, Amit expressed satisfaction over his performance.
“I am very happy with the way I had performed in Budapest. I was aiming for the gold as I had practiced hard for the tournament but unfortunately couldn’t get it due to bad umpiring decision. The referee warned me for not attacking the Iranian and awarded him the point.
“I was a contender for gold. But thats okay, I am happy with with the silver and overwhelmed by the reception received here.”
An excited Bajrang said he wanted to continue with the momentum and produce even better results.
“Happy to have made the whole country proud. This is India’s best-ever finish in the World Championship,” he said.
Both wrestlers also acknowledged Olympic medallists Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt’s contribution in their medal winning performances.
“They are our role models. Both egged us on to carry on the good work and gun for glory. Their kind words helped me a lot. They always encouraged me on before every bout,” said Amit.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
