Another feather in Premlata’s cap, conquers Mt Vinson
After becoming the oldest woman in the country to have climbed Mount Everest, Premlata Agrawal has conquered Mt Vinson in Antarctica in her pursuit to complete the ‘mountaineering challenge’ of climbing the “Seven Summits”.
Premlata, sponsored by Tata Steel, completed her Mt Vinson expedition on January 6, according to a statement on Friday.
Those successful in conquering all the seven summits are considered members of the ‘Hall of Fame’ for mountaineers.
If 49-year-old Premlata achieves this remarkable feat, which she is targeting to accomplish in 2013, she will then become the first Indian woman and one of the oldest women in the world to conquer all seven summits.
With the recent acheivement, Premlata has only one peak left — Mt McKinley — which she narrowly missed last year, because of rough weather.
The other peaks she had scaled so far are Mt Everest, (29,035 ft, Asia.), Killimanjaro (19,334 ft, Africa.), Aconcagua (22,841 ft, South Africa.), Mount Elbrus (18,442 ft, Europe), and the Carstensz Pyramid (16,023 ft) in Australia.
These achievements were also recognised as a national record besieds finding a place in the Limca Book of Records.
Premlata, a homemaker and mother of two grown up daughters, started climbing at the age of 35.
