AP stun defending champions
Holders West Bengal suffered a shock loss on the opening day of the 40th sub-junior basketball championship at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna on Sunday.
In the boys’ section league stage, Andhra Pradesh got the better of the West Bengal 79-48.
Earlier, Odisha boys rode on S.K. Riaz’s 28 points to hammer Chandigarh 70-26. Riaz and Srikant Jena (14) were the main contributers for the winners while Azizinder scored 12 points for Chandigarh.
In other matches, Kerala drubbed Delhi 73-30. Dennis (31) was the lead scorer while Shavn A. chipped in with 10 points.
Suraj (18) and Ayush (11) scripted Uttrakhand’s 50-32 win over Karnataka (Srujan 7, Vishnu 6).
The match started on an even note as both the teams were locked 12-12 in the first quarter but Uttrakhand cut down on their errors and took the next one 20-10. Thereafter, both the teams were involved in keen tussle but Uttrakhand consolidate their lead to pocket the win.
Mizoram beat Assam 65-27 while Madhya Pradesh registered a convincing 50-24 win over Haryana.
In the girls’ section, defending champions Chhattisgarh posted the biggest win of the day, demolishing Jharkhand 104-12. Vimla Ekka (18) was the top-scorer while N. Ashwini and Mahima added 16 points each.
In another one-sided match of the day, Pushpanjali (14) and Yamini (6) helped Assam defeat Bihar 27-2.
Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal were the other team to post convincing victories.
HP streamrolled Jammu & Kashmir 57-6 while West Bengal got the better of Chandigarh 38-18.
Andhra Pradesh downed a fighting Uttrakhand 49-35, while Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh defeated Haryana 59-25 and Punjab 45-29, respectively.
