Army to construct collapsed bridge outside JN Stadium

The Delhi government has requested the Army to construct a bailey bridge in place of the foot overbridge that had collapsed on Tuesday outside the main Commonwealth Games venue of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Top PWD officials said the Army would start working on the bridge on Saturday only and the work is expected to be over in five days time. Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta has requested the Army to construct a bailey bridge outside the stadium and the Army has readily agreed to it, PWD chief engineer A.K. Sinha said.

The decision to ask the Army to construct a bridge was taken after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh instructed Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit to put every effort to make the event a success in a meeting held on Thursday evening.

Sinha said the PWD would also extend its support to the Army in the construction of the bridge. The 95 metre-long under-construction foot overbridge had collapsed on September 21 injuring 27 people.

The bridge was intended to be a showpiece and connect the parking lot of the stadium with other side of the street in Lodhi Road area in South Delhi. The bridge was being built along with another overbridge at the cost of Rs 10.5 crore by Chandigarh-based company PNR Infra.
