Aryan Goveas of Maharashtra knocked out Tamil Nadu’s third seed Raswant Ravi in the boy’s singles and registered the first upset of the Walchand Cup U-16 National Series junior tennis tournament being organised and hosted by Deccan Gymkhana on Monday.

On the inaugural day of this event, Mumbai-based Goveas stayed strong in the decider after losing the second set in the tie-breaker. Goveas won 6-4, 6-7 (7-2), 6-2 and progressed into the second round of the boy’s singles second round.

Lucky losers Mohit Bhardwaj (Delhi) and Karan Lalchadani (Maharashtra) had a great day, both making the most of their luck by winning their first round matches.

Lalchadani eased past Delhi’s Parth Agarwal 6-2, 6-4. Bhardwaj had a relatively tougher outing against Yashesh Mulchandani of Madhya Pradesh, winning 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6).

In a match that went the distance, city lad Jayesh Pungaliya, seeded sixth, survived a huge scare from State-mate Manav Pondkule. Pungaliya won the first set 6-2, before losing the second 3-6. Jayesh just got it right towards the end, wining the final set tie-breaker 8-6.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
