Some players may be lucky enough to win several titles in their lifetime. But the luckiest players are those who win the titles that will be forever remembered. Four Kerala girls have won such a title for Kerala on Tuesday and are enthralled at the pink city, Jaipur.

Giving a boost to Kerala badminton, K.P Sruthii, Sneha Santhilal, Daya Elsa Jacob and Farha Mather have clinched the National Junior Badminton Championship held in Jaipur defeating Air India. The last time Kerala won this title was eight years ago.

“It was a great experience with the team. We had a very good tournament and the girls are equally excited about the win,” says the team coach M.L Narendran.

“After the round matches, we had some tough games. We beat West Bengal in the quarterfinals and Maharashtra in the semifinal to reach the final. The final against Air India was the toughest. However, the girls were able to win the title in style,” he said.

Air India had a good team and the win shows that we have improved a lot in the game, he said. “We have a bunch of talented youngsters in both girls and boys category. If they are groomed well, we can expect an international medal from the state son,” he said. In the boys category, Kerala lost to Maharashtra in the semifinals. “If we had pressed some more, we would have won that match too.

It is really nice to see our players winning titles in the national level,” he said. In both the singles and doubles, the girls were exceptional. “In the doubles category we had an upper hand. Daya Elsa Jacob and Sneha Santhilal played excellently. In the singles in the knockout phase, we lost only one match that too in the quarterfinal,” he said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
