Bowling in Malabar gets a boost
Ten-pin bowling has slowly found acceptance among Keralites with the opening of a couple of bowling alleys in the State.
Youngsters, especially during the vacation period, are flocking to the bowling alleys to understand how to play the game.
“About 200 to 300 people are visiting our bowling alley every day in Kozhikode, which got started two months ago.
Though most of them have no idea about the game, slowly the youngsters are coming forward to learn the game,” said B.Syed, operational manager of Amoeba South India.
“We want people to be aware of the game’s rules. What I have understood is that people are very curious about it and many come forward to learn it in our Kozhikode alley.
We are also planning to conduct a bowling tournament in Kozhikode within a couple of months. However, we have to ensure there are some players who know the game well to participate in the tournament,” he said.
The company organised two competitions in Kochi in 2011. “Both were major crowd pullers. The youngsters in the State are really interested in the sport. So we have decided to expand our operations,” he said.
“We would like to attract the youngsters to the new sports in Malabar. More expansions are on the cards for the game in the State,” he said.
The bowling alley at Focus Mall in Kozhikode is a four-lane one and is open from 11 am to 11 pm, 365 days. The interest so far shown by the people in Kochi has been very enthusiastic.
“We did not expect this would become a major attraction in Kochi. But what helped was that people started visiting the bowling alley along with their families. At Kochi, we now have a regular set of players,” he said.
