Chirag yearns for the right kicks

In the next round of I league, Chirag United Kerala will have an easier away game against Shillong Lajong FC but problem of scoring still hangs like the sword of Damocles on the Kerala outfit.

Though the two strikers Anil Kumar and Nigerian David Sunday have proved their mettle on the field, Chirag coach, Nizam Packeer Ali will be demanding more from them to ensure the victory of the team.

Losing their home match against Kolkatan giants East Bengal, the team once again has proved their flaws in the striking.

Though Chirag took the lead in the first half with brisk attacks, the visitors countered the match with sheer experience and good game play. In tune with their play, it was Chirag who dominated the first half with their short passes and wing play.

But the absence of their captain K. Ajayan, due to injury took a toll on the home side as they were left in the lurch in the midfield. The lack of proper bench strength proved fatal for the team and the absence of an experienced player became the major reason for the defeat.

However, in the second half, it was East Bengal who reined in the play most of the time. Inexperience coupled with lack of stamina proved costly for the home team. “We need to improve our play in the second half. Besides, players should start to think. This can happen only through match practices and I believe we are improving,” said Nizam Packeer Ali.

“The team will be focusing more on correcting the mistakes we made in the last games. Training will focus on this aspect,” he said. “East Bengal is one of the best teams in India and I think our team did a great job. Though lost, we were able to put on a descent show. I wish I had been part of the team. I am trying my best to recuperate from my injury. We also lost right back Noushad due to injury,” said captain Ajayan.

Though they lost the last game, the Chirag players are confident about their prospects in the I league with their win against Prayag United in their last match against Thiruvananthapuram.

Wingers Usman Ashik and Vineeth have been impressive and improving with Anil Kumar in front. The game against Shillong Lajong FC on December 29 will be a crucial one for the Kerala side and they will be trying to get the maximum points out of it.
