‘Excited to be India coach’
Scott Flemming, the new head coach of the Indian senior men’s national basketball team, was excited and sees his role as a chance to develop the sport at the grassroots level in the country.
“I had been looking for another head coaching position, an opportunity to not only do what I love, but to make a real difference, when this opportunity was presented to me,” Flemming said.
Flemming has 30 years of collegiate and professional coaching experience in the US.
During his career, he earned two National Coach of the Year awards
“The more I looked into it, the more excited I became as it’s really a chance to grow the game of basketball at a true grassroots level in the largest untapped market in the world.
“As India’s national programme is committed to growth and improvement, as demonstrated by the foundation that’s been built over the last few years, with my background and with what I’ve done, it’s a great fit,” he added.
Prior to joining the BFI, Flemming was the assistant coach of the Texas Legends in the NBA Development League, where he often served as the acting head coach, leading both current and future NBA players.
He has also served as the men’s head coach and athletic director at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio. During his years with the Cougars, Flemming compiled an overall record of 397-226 (.64 winning percentage) — the most wins of any coach in the programme’s 40-year history.
Former coach Kenny Natt will continue in an advisory role with the BFI, overseeing the progress of both the men’s and women’s national team programmes, from his new post as director of basketball at the IMG Academy in Florida.
Throughout his career, Flemming has been a coach and sought after speaker at basketball events and training camps, having directed many of them, most recently holding a series of clinics for national team members and coaches in the Ivory Coast.
He has also coached a number of teams internationally, including leading teams from the US in exhibition tours with professional and national teams in Poland, Sweden, Jamaica and Mexico.
