Goutham set for international debut

As motorsport in India continues to reach new heights, Chennai boy Goutham Parekh will now add to the list of Indians racing internationally. Goutham has been offered a fully-sponsored drive in the WGA Supercars ME Championship, the premier saloon car Championship in the Middle East. The WGA Championship is a joint venture of the Western Gulf Advisory and the Bahrain International Circuit. The event will boast a line-up of powerful Chevrolet Lumina V8 Supercars.

Representing Team Wallace Sports, Goutham came to spotlight at the JK Tyre Junior Cup single-seater championship in 2007. Goutham, who finished third at the Formula Swift championship last year, is brimming with joy.

“Heading into the new campaign, the event remains the region’s most popular and most highly regarded circuit racing series, and the only one sanctioned by the International Automobile Federation (FIA). It is, indeed, an honour to be the only Indian selected to contest the entire championship and I have to thank Team WSRF and Karun Chandhok for guiding me,” said Goutham.

Karun, co-owner of WSRF, noted that it was a great opportunity for the young driver. “It’s a big step up for him. I wish him the best and am sure he will make an impact on the international level”. Goutham will now be joining the Speeding Saddles Team, part of the Western Gulf Advisory, who will go on to participate in the British F3 Championship after the conclusion of the Chev- rolet Supercars series.

The 24-year-old from Chennai will kick off his campaign at the Reem International circuit in Saudi Arabia before racing in front of packed audiences as the Official support race for the GP2 Series and then for the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix on March 12 and 13. The championship also visits the spectacular Yas Marina circuit before its finale at the picturesque Losail International Circuit in Qatar, home of the Moto GP’s only night race.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
