Governor Vohra pitches for promotion of golf and other sports
Srinagar: Governor N N Vohra today stressed on the need for reviving and promoting golfing and other sports activities in the state in a big way."Time has come to revive some of our old traditions and the sports activities like golf for which Kashmir has been known for over a century," Vohra said while addressing a prize distribution ceremony of the Governor's Cup golf tournament organised by the Kashmir Golf Club at the famous Royal Springs Golf Course here.The Governor, who is the patron of Kashmir Golf Club, complimented the organisers for the initiative, and expressed the hope that the tournament would go a long way in popularising the game in the state.Speaking on the occasion, Northern Army Commander, Lt. Gen K T Parnaik said the Royal Springs Golf Course is among the best golf courses in the world and said that the tournament should be made an annual event.He invited all the golfers to play at the golf courses developed by the Army in the state as well.Chief Secretary Mohammad Iqbal Khandey, who is also the chairman of the KGC, said the club is one of the oldest in the country having a long history of organising many tournaments.He added that every effort was being made to make the club vibrant and assured all possible support for this purpose.Director Tourism and secretary of Kashmir Golf Club, Talat Pervez, said the tournament would be made an annual feature and added that such sporting events would go a long way in the promotion of tourism in the state.The tournament, played between the Governor's team and the Army Commander's team, was won by the Governor's team.
