India up for cycling carnival
The first edition of the Tour de India will see participation from 80 international and 30 domestic cyclists, and will be held in three cities — Mumbai on December 2, followed by Srinagar on December 4 before concluding in Greater Noida on December 9.
The event has attracted the attention of teams who participate in Tour De France such as Astana and top Asian and European giants.
“It takes $12 million plus to maintain a cycling team and India being one of the leading economies is now tapping the corporate potential. It is a step towards making cycling a national sport in India,” said International Cycling Union president David McQuaid.
“Already I have been in India on and off over the past three years. We have the vision and year on year we have developed the cycling infrastructure, awareness and the working relationships that are needed.”
