India start on a high
It was a good day at the office for Indian fencers in the opening round of the 2nd South Asian fencing championship being held at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium, Hyderabad, on Tuesday.
India’s Ambily P.A., Mounika and R.K. Rabika Devi dominated the proceedings in the group matches of the women’s epee category.
In Group ‘A’, Ambily, representing India ‘A’, started her campaign on the frontfoot as her superior skill and speed did her Nepali opponent, Jyothi Raj Banshi, in. Ambily took little time to get in to the groove, accruing points comfortably as she breached Jyothi’s defence with relative ease.
She then continued her excellent performance as she blanked Munjila Akter of Bangladesh 5-0. However, she tasted defeat at the hands of Sandeep Sandamali of Sri Lanka, going down 3-4. But she got her campaign back on track as she registered a 5-3 win over Y. Hala of India ‘B’.
In the Group ‘B’ category, Mounika of India ‘B’ and Rabika of India ‘A’ performed well for the hosts. Mounika started on a high as she tore apart Anjane Jarga Magar of Nepal, winning the tie 5-0. She then registered victories against Janaya Chakma of Bangladesh (5-2) and Piyuni Krishanthi of Sri Lanka (5-3).
Rabika defeated Piyuni of Sri Lanka (5-0), Anjane of Nepal and Janaya Chakma of Bangladesh (5-1). In the tie between Mounika and Rabika, the former emerged victorious, scoring 5 points against 3. Mounika displayed excellent footwork and defensive technique to keep away from Rabika’s blade.
Mounika’s excellent movement across the strip forced Rabika to drop her guards in search of points, a strategy which worked in favour of Mounika.
