Indian women lift Asiad bronzes in squash, boxing

Guangzhou: Indian women were in the forefront at the Asian Games here on Wednesday, with the squash team and boxer Kavita Goyat picking up bronze medals.

Ashwini Chidananda Akkunji and Jauna Murmu qualified for the 400 metres hurdles with personal best timings.

Boxer Suranjoy Singh also claimed a bronze in the men's section.

India's medal tally is now 42, comprising seven golds, 12 silvers and 23 bronzes.

The women squash team had to settle for a bronze after losing 0-2 to a formidable Malaysian side in the semifinals.

In the first match, India's Anaka Alankamony lost 2-11, 4-11, 6-11 to Wee Wern Low in 22 minutes.

Top ranked Indian and World No. 37 Joshna Chinappa then went down to World No.1 Nicol David 4-11, 2-11 3-11 in 18 minutes.

Kavita Goyat had to be content with the bronze after losing her semifinal bout 1-5 to Jinzi Li of China in the 69-75 kg category.

The Chinese opened up a 3-1 lead in the first round and added two more points in the fourth round. Li will take on Mongolia's Undram Erdenesoyol in the final.

Later in the day, India's four-time world champion Mary Kom will take on another Chinese, Cancan Ren, in the 48-51 kg semifinal.

In the men's event, as many as seven Indian boxers will compete in semifinals in various weight categories and all of them are assured of at least a bronze.

Both Ashwini and Jauna topped their 400 metres hurdles heats.

Jauna qualified with a timing of 57.17 seconds while Ashwini, whose season's best is 59.26 seconds, clocked 56.43 seconds. The final of the event will be held Thursday.

In the men's 400 metre hurdles, Joseph Abraham qualified with a timing of 50.93.

In men's decathlon, Bharat Inder Singh came third with a throw of 14.50 metres in shot put that fetched him 749 points. He had earlier come sixth in long jump, leaping 7.12 metres and collecting 842 points, and finished eighth in the 100 metre race. With his good show in shot put, Inder Singh jumped to second place in overall standing after three events with a total of 2,448 points in the 10 discipline event.

Another Indian, Joseph Pulimoottil, was seventh in long jump (6.91 m) and fourth in shot put (14.31 m) collecting 792 and 747 points. Joseph was sixth in 100 metres. He is at sixth place with 2,389 points after three events.

Kazakhstan's Dmitry Karpov, who topped the shot put event with a throw of 16.95 metres, led with 2,635 points.

Indian women lost 0-1 to Japan through a golden goal and finished fourth in Asian Games hockey here Wednesday.

The two halves were goalless before Japan converted their 10th penalty corner through Ai Murakami (78th minute).

India had won a bronze in Doha Asian Games.

Suranjoy Singh settled for a bronze in the men's 52 kg after going down fighting 5-6 to China's Yong Chang.

The Indian trailed 0-3 in the first round, fought back in the second to trail 1-4 and rallied with an attacking game to level 5-5.

The Chinese pulled one off in the third and final round while Suranjoy failed to score despite desperate attempts as Yong showed good defensive skills to keep him at bay.
