Indian women win opener
India’s women began their campaign on an exciting note defeating Thailand 57-44 in the first round of the 7th Asian Youth Netball Championship at the revamped Thyagaraj Sports Complex here on Saturday.
The hosts won the first quarter 13-11 with their superior pace but Thailand drew level winning the second quarter 15-11.
But, the Indians boosted by the home support won the next two quarters 17-7 and 16-11.
For India, captain Prachi Trehan (39), Megha (8) and Neha Bajaj (10) were the scorers, while Siriwan Senongaen (19) and Sirima Samanaree (25) did their best to stop the spirited hosts.
In other matches, Malaysia beat Hong Kong 78-11 (21-3, 23-3, 16-3, 18-2) and Singapore overcame Sri Lanka 69-49 (14-16, 15-16, 7-19, 13-18).
India will next face Asian champions Sri Lanka in the tournament which is also a test event for the Commonwealth Games. After the first round, that follows a round robin format, the top four teams will progress to the semifinals.
