IOC comes to IOA’s aid
The International Olympic Committee provided much needed relief to the Indian Olympic Association by backing the latter on the contentious tenure issue. The sports ministry were asked by the IOC’s Executive Board (EB) ‘to respect the autonomy of the Olympic Charter in India’.
“All pending issues were discussed at length and resolved. It was agreed that the National Olympic Committee and the Olympic movement in India would implement the basic principles of good governance in accordance with the Olympic Charter; that the government of India would fully respect the autonomy of the Olympic movement in India; and that all parties would work together to establish fruitful collaboration based on mutual respect and understanding,” an IOC letter said.
The world body added that it would monitor the situation in India. “The EB was very satisfied with this outcome, but also stressed that the IOC will monitor the situation and will ensure that the Olympic Charter is respected in India,” the statement added.
Joint secretary Injeti Srinivas led the sports ministry delegation while the IOA was represented by its secretary general Randhir Singh in the June 18 meeting in Lausanne.
“The Olympic movement in India will not suffer. We have to implement the new Wada rules,” Randhir said.
