Jasvir clinches Standard, Sharif takes Radial title
Jasvir Singh did not end it with a bang but the Army Yachting Node sailor did what he had to do to clinch the title in the Standard class of the Laser National Sailing Championship in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Enjoying a healthy lead at the top, Jasvir just had to avoid any catastrophe to confirm his title.
In Race 10, Jasvir took an early lead to sail comfortably to victory, leaving AYN’s Dharmender Singh and EME Sailing Association’s B.K. Rout in a battle for the second spot, which the former won.
Later in Race 11 Jasvir finished ninth to complete the formalities in the Standard class. AYN’s Gajender Singh, who was on a roll on Saturday, finished fourth on Race 10 and third on Race 11 to take the runner-up spot. Dharmender Singh took home the bronze medal to complete a clean-sweep for the AYN in Standard class.
In 4.7 class, Vir Menon, who surged back into lead on Saturday after some poor performances the day before, however went for the kill.
The youngster, representing the Royal Madras Yachting Club, won both Race 10 and Race 11 to win the title. Day Two sensation Prince Noble of Kerala Yachting Association took the silver medal after finishing fifth and third in the day’s races while RMYC’s Dheer Singhi pocketed the bronze medal. Dheer had finished fourth in Race 10 and second in Race 11.
Local lad Tarun Bhatia of Secunderabad Sailing Club finished second and fifth in Race 10 and Race 11 respectively to finish fourth overall.
In Radial class, it was business as usual as AYN sailors took all three medals.
Sharif Khan, who was clearly a much dominant sailor than the rest, won Race 9, finished second in Race 10 and then won Race 11 with ease to take home the gold medal. Ramesh Kumar bagged the silver while Amandeep Singh settled for bronze.
