Jr wrestling nationals from today
The 32nd boys’ freestyle, greco roman and 16th girls sub-junior national wrestling championship will be held at the St. Antony School Ground in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu from June 27 to 30.
The tournament, hosted by the Tamil Nadu State Amateur Wrestling Association under the aegis of Wrestling Federation of India, will have 10 weight categories from 42 to 100kg for boys and an equal number for the girls from 38 to 70 kg.
About 600 grapplers from 27 affiliated state and union territories units & the Services Sports Control Board will participate in the event. The tournament, which will be inaugurated by WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, will also serve as selection trials for the national coaching camp scheduled from July 8. All the medallists will be included in the national camp.
During the events, the teams for the Asian Cadet freestyle, greco roman and female wrestling championship to be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from July 25 to 28 will also be selected.
The WFI has expressed confidence that the boys and girls will do well in the Mongolia event given the kind of performances they have dished out in recent times.
The juniors won the championship with 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in the freetstyle category recently at the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship while the girls’ team finished the runners-up.
