Karun shakes off rust, tests GP2 car
After a four-month hiatus, Karun Chandhok has made a comeback to the cockpit. The Chennai driver, who has been signed by his F1 team Hispania Racing since the British GP in July, returned to action in GP2 to shakedown the Ocean Racing Technology car with the new 2011-spec car.
The test run, which was held at the Paul Ricard circuit, being seen as vital. As teams face the prospect of limited testing, ORT called on the services of the Indian racer, who has extensive experience of competing in GP2 prior to his graduation to F1 with Hispania Racing at the start of the year.
Karun said the test helped him knock off the rust. “I was very happy to go to Paul Ricard to help my old team,” the 26-year-old was quoted as saying.
“I really hope my experience in Formula 1 and in GP2 helped them. My goal for 2011 is to remain in Formula 1, but for the time being it is good to have the opportunity of knowing the new GP2 car and help Ocean to obtain better setting,” Karun said.
The test also marked the first time that GP2 teams had run the new Pirelli tyres that will be used in the series next year.
Meanwhile, Armaan Ebrahim will compete in the official GP2 tests at Yas Marina circuit from Tuesday. The 21-year-old will drive for Arden and Coloni. Armaan had a creditable season in Formula Two and is hopeful of graduating to GP2 next year.
“GP2 is the logical next step. It’s a competitive series and I am looking forward to do well in the Abu Dhabi test,” said Armaan.
