Kerala shuttlers ready for action
As the 76th National Open Badminton Championship kickstarts at Bangalore’s Raheja Badminton Stadium on Friday, 14 shuttlers from Kerala will be vying for honour in the high profile show.
“We have sent a good team this time. In the team events, we will become at least runners up if we are not drawn with the mighty Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) team,” said Kerala Badminton (Shuttle) Association secretary Muralidharan.
This year, Kerala will be relying on 19-year-old P.C Thulasi from Palakkad in the women’s category. Thulasi, who is the top seeded player in the women’s category, is powered by her first senior singles title victory at the Tata Open International Tournament held recently in Mumbai.
She was the only Indian to claim a title in the event. She has also won gold in Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 and won silver in the National Games 2011.
In the men’s doubles, experienced and reigning champions Rupesh Kumar (PSPB) and Sanave Thomas of Kerala will have the upper hand.
Both of them have represented India in several International tournaments and their experience will be a major asset.
Daya Elsa Jacob and Megha Ninan are the other two players, who are coming with title glory.
They both have recently won the All India Inter University Badminton Championship for MG University. Megha Ninan will be playing in the mixed doubles category with P.S. Sooraj in the qualifiers.
“In the team events, the women’s team are the current reigning champions in the south zone. Besides, Bennet Antony & P.S. Sooraj are also a good pair to be watched out," said Muralidharan.
