Monika rejoins CWG camp
Top-ranked women’s lifter Monika Devi on Monday joined 33 other elite lifters in the ongoing training programme for the Commonwealth Games, after her two-year doping ban ended last month.
She joined training for the October 3 to 14 event after clearing a confirmatory test, the Indian Weightlifting Federation said on Monday.
The 69-kg weightlifter Monika, who was stopped from taking part in the Beijing Olympics two years ago under controversial circumstances, is now training at the Sports Authority of India facilities at Shilaroo near Shimla.
“Monika’s ban period ended last month and she cleared a mandatory confirmatory test by the Nada and has joined CWG camp at Shilaroo some days back,” IWF secretary Sahdev Yadav said.
“34 lifters are training at the SAI centre at Shilaroo and all the facilities are being provided to the lifters there,” he added.
Monika had failed a dope test last year and her two-year ban had expired on June 5.
Only 15 athletes will be selected from the 34 lifters training at Shilaroo to represent India at the quadrennial tournament.
