Pornanong wins; Aditi in top ten
For Pornanong Phatlum, the celebrations of her 23rd birthday began early at the DLF Golf and the Country Club. On Sunday, the stylish Thai golfer received her biggest birthday present a first Ladies European Tour title after firing a sixunder 66, for a record total of 13-under 203, on the final day of the $300,000 Hero Women’s Indian Open here.
With the win, Pornanong also won the Open for a record third time (2008, 2009, 2012). “I’m so happy.
It’s a big tournament, it will be my birthday and it’s going to be a big present for me,” said Pornanong, who turns 23 on Wednesday.
Saturday’s star and defending champion Caroline Hedwall finished four strokes behind Pornanong at nine-under 207, while another Thai, Nontaya Srisawang, ended third at seven-under 209.
Pornanong led through the day, though she was under threat from her playing partner Caroline towards the end.
After a mesmerising front nine that had four birdies and an eagle (on the par-5 16th), Pornanong felt the jitters on the homestretch.
Meanwhile, Aditi Ashok, the 14-year-old Bengaluru amateur, was the best among the Indians with oneunder 215. She signed off in joint eighth place. Local lass Nalini Singh Siwach was the best pro at 33rd.
Sharing the 45th place with three others were Vani Kapoor, Sharmila Nicollet and amateur Gurbani Singh at nine-over 225.
