Record haul for Police team
A 39-member Indian Police team returned from the World Police & Fire Games in Belfast from August 1 to 10 with a record-breaking haul of 83 medals including 48 gold, 22 silver and 13 bronze medals.
The final tally was one better than the record set at the 2005 Games in Quebec (Canada).
In athletics, the 14-member team won 22 gold, nine silver and six bronze medals. While the men picked up 15 medals including seven golds, the women returned with 22 medals including 15 golds.
S. Sini of Kerala Police won the sprint double (100, 200m), Anju Thomas and Chinchu Jose also of Kerala Police won the 400 and 800 metres respectively.
Not to be outdone, Manpreet Kaur of BSF won gold in the 100 and 400m hurdles.
Anuradha Singh of CISF pulled off the distance double winning the 5,000 and 10,000m races while Neha Singh of CISF topped the long jump and triple jump events.
The crowning glory came in the 4x100 and 4x400m relays where Sini, Anju, Chinchu and Manpreet beat tough competition from Mexico and USA to win the gold in both events.
In judo, T.H. Kalpana Devi (ITBP, 52 kg), L. Nirupama Devi (CRPF, 63 kg) and C.H. Jina Devi (SSB, 78 kg) won their individual weight categories.
Four women boxers — K. Mandakini Chanu (SSB, 57 kg.), Preeti Beniwal (Haryana Police, 60 kg), Poonam (SSB, 75 kg) and Kavita (Haryana Police, 81 kg) — topped their weight categories.
