Retaining tainted Kalmadi in IOA wrong, says Sports Minister Maken
Sports Minister Ajay Maken has slammed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for continuing to retain its tainted lawmaker Suresh Kalmadi, as its chief even after he was accused of facilitating corrupt practices during the Commonwealth Games.
Kalmadi has been replaced by acting President Vijay Kumar Malhotra as head of the Indian association (IOA) but has not resigned his post and is still the official IOA president.
Maken said that the IOA could only be trusted if it takes a tough stand on Kalmadi, in a way forcing him to resign as the chief.
"Under the current situation, the IOA is facing flak and has been unsuccessful in removing its chief, Suresh Kalmadi even after facing such serious corruption charges. It is not possible to trust the IOA and they do not seem competent to hold any big games.
Until the IOA doesn''t take strict action on removing its chief, it shouldn''t really expect the federal government to believe in it or shoulder any responsibility to it," Maken told media here.
