Saina, Gagan to be torch bearers
Aug. 12: The Queens Baton Relay which will take place in Hyderabad on Saturday, will see sportspersons from the city come together to imbibe the Commonwealth Games spirit.
The QBR which was earlier scheduled to commence from People’s Plaza and end at KVBR Stadium, Yousufguda, will see a change in the programme.
“Once the Baton reaches the Shamshabad Airport, it will be taken in a convoy of vehicles to KVBR Stadium via the P.V. Narasimha Rao Expressway through Mehdipatnam, Masab Tank, Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Ameerpet,” Mr A.K. Parida, principal secretary of youth affairs and sports, told a press conference on Thursday.
“The baton will be handed to the first bearer — World No. 2 badminton shuttler Saina Nehwal — by the Governor, Mr E.S.L. Narasimhan, who will flag off the relay,” said Parida.
“The baton is scheduled to reach the People’s Plaza by 6 pm where the official ceremony will take place. Shooter Gagan Narang will be the last baton bearer who will hand it to the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah,” he added.
The Government has also decided to felicitate all the Padmashree, Dronacharya and Arjuna awardees as well as Olympians with a memento and shawl. A cultural show will follow thereafter.
On Sunday, the Queen’s Baton will be put on display at the KVBR Stadium for public viewing. On August 16, the baton and the team will leave for Visakhapatnam at 11.45 am by air.
