Sanawar boys attempt Everest
A team of six boys from the Lawrence School, Sanawar, are attempting a first in the history of mountaineering by undertaking an expedition to the world’s highest peak, Mt Everest.
The six — Hakikat Singh Grewal, Guribadat Singh, Prithvi Singh, Ajay Sohal, Shubham and Fateh Singh — are from Punjab, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh and have been given extensive five-month training by Colonel Neeraj Rana, who himself has undertaken many mountaineering expeditions.
“The boys have undergone extensive training in all formats of stamina build-up, fitness as well as adventure sports to equip them to cope with the hardships on Everest,” Rana said .
“The students were trained on various aspects including mountaineering training at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling, muscle build-up and strengthening exercises, weight training as well as 1,000 kms of cycling on various terrain in the Thar desert.
“They will be further trained on cross training, endurance and a 10-day high altitude winter-training-cum-acclimatisation trek at Khardung La in Ladakh,” he added.
The two-month expedition will get underway on April 5 when the students leave from the capital for Kathmandu.
