Sathiyan is youth champ
G. Sathiyan rallied from a game down to beat his Petroleum Sports Promotion Board mate Harmeet Desai 4-3 in the final of the youth boys category at the national ranking (North Zone) table tennis championships at the Thyagraj Stadium in the capital on Friday.
Sathiyan, who also won at the South Zone championships in September, prevailed 4-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5 to emerge champion.
For Harmeet, it was his second successive title loss having been outwitted in the men’s singles final by Sanil Shetty.
In the youth girls’ event, Olympian Ankita Das beat Suthirtha Mukherjee of West Bengal 4-3 (12-10, 11-2, 9-11, 11-9, 11-13, 9-11, 11-3) for her first title of the season. However, Suthirtha managed to win her singles final in the junior girls section. She downed Karnath Spoorthy of Airport Authority of India 4-1 (11-8, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4).
The junior boys crown was taken by Abhishek Yadav of PSPB. He accounted for Delhi’s Utkarsh Gupta 3-2 (11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 9-11, 11-6) in the final.
The Sathiyan-Desai final had all the ingredients of a thriller. The battle swung from one end to another before Sathiyan had the last laugh.
