Shooting gets a fillip in Kerala
The popularity of shooting, India’s biggest medal prospect in the international circuit, is increasing in Kerala.
Giving a boost to this high-profile sporting event, Shooting Sports Foundation of India, an initiative of national coach Prof. Sunny Thomas, has started functioning in the State.
Scores of aspiring shooters took part in the Kerala Cup Shooting Championship, first endeavour of this project held in the State capital last week. Palakkad district emerged the overall champions in the championship.
Prof. Sunny said the initiative was intended to bring in world-class coaching to improve shooting programmes in the state. “It will create opportunities for amatuer shooters and take the activity to all levels of competition,” he said.
The organisers said they plan to conduct similar events in other parts of the country following a coaching, competition and evaluation model. Coaching camps will be held in the presence of national coaches and international shooters.
Roshin Mathew, secretary general of the foundation says: “This kind of management in shooting is unique in any part of the world and we are setting a new standard in benchmarking the activity.”
