Sindhu eyes glory at worlds

Back in action after weeks of injury lay-off, promising shuttler P.V. Sindhu said she was raring to compete in her maiden senior world championships at Guangzhou, China, early next month.

Sindhu, who won the 2013 Malaysia Grand Prix championship this May, missed the Thailand and Indonesia Opens because of a knee injury. “I am really excited to play my first seniors world championships. Earlier, I have played in the junior category. I am confident and am looking forward to do well. My aim is to make the quarter-finals at least,” said the world no. 12 Sindhu on the sidelines of an event here on Monday.
“My style of play is more aggressive but currently I am working on defence along with my coaches,” said the Hyderabadi shuttler, who would turn 18 this week. At 17, Sindhu has forced the badminton world to take notice with a couple of impressive shows this season. She reached the semi-finals of the India Open Super Series besides making the quarters of the Sudirman Cup.
While Sindhu was excited about going for the Worlds, seasoned shuttler Jwala Gutta informed that she will give the world championship a miss.
“I had sent my entry along with V. Diju in the mixed doubles, but I do not pair up him any more. And in the women’s doubles me and Prajakta (Sawant) don’t make it due to rankings,” she explained.
In the 2011 worlds, Jwala along with Ashwini Ponnappa had claimed a bronze in the women’s doubles category.
After the London Olympics, Jwala has paired up with Prajakta (women’s doubles) and Manu Atri (mixed doubles) but is yet to show good results. “I am back from a six-month injury lay-off and have started playing alongside new players. So, it will take sometime for me to get back into rhythm. You will see the results soon,” she said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
