Small man’s big leap
Joby Mathew clinched gold medal in badminton singles in the twelfth National Paralympics Badminton Championship held in Bengaluru.
He defeated C.V. Rajanna of Karnataka 21-10, 21-11 in the final.
With the win Joby has been qualified to take part in the Asian Paralympics Badminton tournament to be held in South Korea in December.
“I am delighted with the win. Now, I have to concentrate in the doubles final. I hope I can represent India in both the events,” said the differently-abled athlete. He will team up with Rajanna in the doubles event.
Joby, who is 3’5” tall, has severely under-developed legs, a condition caused by a rare disease called Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD).
Joby Mathew is now training to take part in the London Paralympics 2012, which is scheduled to start on August 29.
“I am participating in swimming and wheelchair fencing. I have been training for the past few months to improve my performance in these events. However, it has been a great moment for me to win the national championship again,” he said.
In the last season, the athlete has won gold in 10 various national meets including in badminton.
