Sofuoglu on podium
Mahi Racing Team India rider and defending Supersport champion Kenan Sofuoglu came up with a solid performance to finish second in the fifth leg of the 2013 supersport world championship season at the Donington Park in the United Kingdom.
Sofuoglu, who began the race in the second position, was locked in a fierce battle for the top stop with pole sitter Sam Lowes of Yacknich Motorsport but missed the chequered flag by a whisker on Monday.
The Turkish rider needed to come up with a strong performance to resurrect his title defence after a DNF in the last round in Monza.
And Sofuoglu did not disappoint. He pushed championship leader Lowes till the last lap and justified the tag of being one of the favourites to claim the championship crown at the end of the season yet again.
Lowes stopped the clock at 33’37.767, with Sofuoglu coming home 11.105 seconds behind.
Mahi Racing’s second rider Fabien Foret finished ninth.
Said Lowes: “If we can be running at the front, taking consistent points then there is no reason why I can’t be up there, but there is a long way to go between now and the end of the year and we know that Kenan is very fast.”
