Sports gets only Rs 11.21bn

New Delhi: The Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry has been allocated Rs 11.21 billion in the Budget for 2011-12, which is nearly one-third of last year's Rs 33.16 billion.

In his Budget presented in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee allocated Rs 10 billion as plan outlay while Rs 1.21 billion will be non-plan.

Expectedly this year's budget allocation has seen a sharp reduction as the last two year's outlay was high due to Commonwealth Games. Last year, the budget allocation was Rs 33.16 billion while in 2009-10, it was Rs 36.7 billion.

Out of the total outlay, Rs 6.88 billion has been allocated for sports and games while Rs 3.11 billion has been earmarked for Youth Welfare Scheme. Other programmes, including Schemes for the Benefit of North Eastern Area and Sikkim, will get Rs 1.06 billion.

The remaining 145.2 million has been allocated under the head Secretariat-Social Services. Under the sports and games head, Sports Authority of India will get the highest amount of Rs 2.87 billion while Rs 1 billion has been earmarked for Assistance to National Sports Federations - as against Rs 1.12 billion of last year. Rs 145 million has been allocated for Anti-Doping Activities, which is just Rs 5 million more than last year's amount.
