Squash: Joshna to meet World No.1
Squash player Joshna Chinappa made short work of local girl Teh Min Jie to storm into the main draw of the $70K Malaysian Open squash tournament at Bukit Jalil on Monday.
The Chennai girl, who is on her comeback trail in high-profile Wispa events after a knee surgery, is expected to pose a stiff challenge to world No.1 Nicol David of Malaysia in the first round. It’s their first meeting on the Tour. India No.1 Dipika Pallikal is seeded 14th in the 32-player draw.
She will meet qualifier Kylie Lindsay of New Zealand in the opener. If she gets past the Kiwi, Dipika will play fourth seed Laura Massaro. The 21-year-old Chennai girl has never beaten the English girl in their previous four clashes.
In the men’s draw of 16, Saurav Ghosal will lock horns with Finland’s Olli Tuominen. Meanwhile, Siddarth Suchde inched closer to make it to the main draw as he upset local boy Kamran Khan in a marathon.
Suddarth prevailed 10-12, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 14-12 in the keenly-contest match that lasted close to two hours.
