Tata Steel ropes in Deepika
The world’s top-ranked woman recurve archer and member of the Indian contingent for the London Olympics, Deepika Kumari has joined Tata Steel as a manager in the company’s sports department.
Deepika won a gold medal in the individual event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and a bronze in the team event.
She had also won a bronze at the Guangzhou Asian Games.
“The development is in line with the company’s philosophy of identifying sporting talent, providing them with opportunities to perform to their optimum at the highest levels of the sport and augmenting their employability potential,” a Tata Steel official said.
Deepika joins a host of eminent sportspersons in the company such as Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to conquer Mt Everest, chess Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua, Arjuna awardee Charles Borromeo and fellow archer Jayanta Talukdar.
Deepika joined the Tata Archery Academy in 2008 and has since honed her skills there.
