Top honours for Jung, Bhagwat
Samaresh Jung and Anjali Vedpathak-Bhagwat emerged winners at the Challenger Cup event of the SEED Gun for Glory Shooting Championship in Pune on Sunday.
Jung, the ‘Best Athlete’ of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, clinched the title in the pistol event with a 8-4 victory over Pushpanjali Rana, while Bhagwat, the 2002 CWG champion, defeated Imran Hasan Khan 10-6, to take home the top honour in the air rifle event at the Shiv Chattrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi.
The Challenger Cup involved an interesting format where the top eight participants from both men and women categories competed in an Open class, on a one-on-one basis, in a fun-filled atmosphere.
Sports minister Ajay Maken, who was the guest of honour at the championship, congratulated Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang and his Gun for Shooting Academy for promoting the sport and taking it to the masses.
“The government will support the efforts of Olympic medal winners if they want to run academies to promote sports and nurture future champions,” he said.
