Top stars to vie for honours
London Olympics-returned paddlers Soumyajit Ghosh and Ankita Das besides Achantha Sharath Kamal, Anthony Amalraj, Poulomi Ghatak and K. Shamini will be seen in action at the 42nd all-India inter-institutional table tennis championships, that get under way at the Kshudiram Anusilan Kendra in Kolkata from Wednesday.
Others stars vying for the `3.32 lakh prize money include Subhajait Saha, Sanil Shetty (men’s) and Mouma Das (women’s).
While the team events commence from Wednesday — with the finals on Friday — the individual rounds will start on August 25 in the season’s opening championships.
Last year’s winners the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board — who lifted the team titles in men, women, youth boys and girls events — have been given top billing in all the categories, while Railway Sports Promotion Board are seeded second.
The championship, organised by the Ordnance Factories Sports Promotion Board, is an events as top two teams from both the men’s and women’s categories get direct entry into the senior nationals.
Similarly, the teams that finish on top of the podium in the youth boys and youth girls sections will get a berths each in the youth national championships.
The tournament will see paddlers from 20 institutions and 19 states competing in the singles and doubles events, with the (singles) winner in the men’s section to receive Rs 75,000 while the women’s champion getting Rs 58,000.
