Two IOC members to attend IOA meet
The International Olympic Committee on Friday gave the go ahead for the Indian Olympic Association’s extraordinary general meeting — scheduled here for August 25 — and also named two of its members who will attend the meet, paving the way for India’s return to the Olympic fold.
“It is our understanding that the (extraordinary general) meeting will take place on August 25, 2013 (within the time frame indicated in my letter of July 6),” IOC director general Christophe De Kepper said in a letter addressed to Indian officials.
“Consequently we take note of this date and we are pleased to confirm that the IOC will attend this extraordinary general meeting on August 25 and will be represented by the IOC honorary member Francisco J. Elizalde who will be accompanied by Jerome Poivey, head of institutional relations at the IOC NOC relations department,” he added.
The world body had last year banned the IOA for not following the IOC Charter while conducting its elections.
De Kepper said that the international body had no problem with the proposed date for holding of the IOA’s elective general meeting on September 29.
The IOC added that it would send its comments on the new IOA constitution by mid-August.
The international body had initially set a July 15 deadline for the amendment of the IOA constitution.
