US drivers bag top honours
Kevin Weil of the US won the 22nd International Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race in a time of 16 hours and 17 minutes. The gruelling event, held recently in the Darjeeling area of the north-eastern Himalayas, saw participation from as many as 15 countries.
Weil received the Sant Nagpal Baba Memorial Gold Award for his efforts. He was followed home by Britain’s Rupert Fowler with a time of 17 hrs 24 min and Holger Schulze of Germany in 18 hrs 49 min.
Elizabeth Weil (USA) topped the women’s section in 18 hrs 47 min, ahead of Rachel Carter of New Zealand and Kimberley Fordham of the US.
Entrants for the events came from the UK, USA, Canada, Scotland, South Africa, Germany, New Zealand, Italy, Australia, Ecuador, Argentina, France, Singapore, United Arab Emirates and India among others. The race was flagged off by district magistrate Saumitra Mohan.
The eldest participant was Vittorio De Benedetti from Italy (73 years), while the gold award for an environmental mission was presented to Peter Satchell from the UK. Three Indian participants also completed the event.
According to race director C.S. Pandey, the ambition behind this eco-adventure sport was to preserve the environment and local heritage of the Indian Himalayas.
