Vishnu crowned Optimist champion
Mumbai sailor Vishnu Sarvanan showed impeccable skill to win four out of the 11 races on the final day to walk away with the silverware with 17 penalty points in the Optimist class championship at the fifth annual Monsoon Regatta, organised by the Yacht Club of Hyderabad at the Hussainsagar on Sunday.
Chitresh Thata of Chennai, with 22 penalty points, claimed silver with three wins and some consistent performances across all the races.
The bronze went to Mahesh Balachander, also of Chennai. Mahesh finished with 33 penalty points.
Top seeds Vishnu, Mahesh and Chitresh dominated despite getting off to bad starts and trailing the fleet during the first few races. But experience played a big role as they negotiated the the tricky winds with ease on the Hussainsagar.
It was a great day for Vishnu, who would later go on to be a part of the championship-winning crew in Family Regatta.
With the Optimist boats staying out on water for four to five hours at a stretch, it also became a test of endurance for the fleet of young sailors.
In the Ind Opti class, Shubam Jadav clinched gold followed by Piyush Chavan who won silver and Aditi Raorane, who claimed bronze.
Meanwhile, match racing champion Ayaz Sheikh and crewmate Sandeep Jain split up to skipper different crews for the Family Regatta championship.
It was a close-run affair, with Sandeep, whose crew comprised Pankaj Panchal, Vishnu and Mayuri, giving Ayaz a run for his money and eventually going on to win the title.
