Weightlifter Chanu fails ‘B’ test, life ban looms
The moment weightlifter Sanamacha Chanu tested positive for the banned substance methylhexaneamine (MHA), her hopes for avoiding a life ban hinged on the results of the “B” sample test. With her second sample also coming out positive Tuesday, the lifter’s fate is now in the hands of the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP).
This is the second dope offence for Chanu, a former Asian champion and 2002 Manchester CWG gold medallist, who tested positive for a diuretic at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The 31-year-old’s sample was collected during the Commonwealth Games selection trials in New Delhi last month. Although she failed to secured a berth in the CWG squad, she tested for the banned stimulant. “Chanu’s ‘B’ sample has also come out positive for MHA. We have sent a notice to Chanu and the Indian Weightlifting Federation. We will fix a date for her if she wants to appear before the National Anti-Doping Agency’s disciplinary panel,” Nada director-general Rahul Bhatnagar said Tuesday.
