At her first appearance after bringing home a bronze medal from the Olympics, Saina Nehwal says that fitness, infrastructure and sponsorship are the things that India needs to work on.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to have big sponsors, but I think everyone would agree that budding athletes have to really struggle for support.
Even beginners need sponsors so that they can focus on the game. As a country, we are enthusiastic about cricket but even other sports need encouragement because we have great talent,” asserts Saina at a zumba dance event announcing a world record attempt, which will take place in the city next month.
On September 15, Hyderabad will get the opportunity to play host to a huge Yoga Solstice, similar to the one that took place at Times Square in New York recently.
Thanks to an initiative by trainer Dinaz Vervatwala, the big event will take place at People’s Plaza in the city.
“After setting the world record for the longest Aerobics Marathon, I wanted to set another record. This particular event requires participation from the city, so I have tied up with schools, colleges, corporates, and NGOs,” says Dinaz.
The record will be set if 95 per cent of the participants “move to the best of their ability” during a Zumba and Bollywood dance aerobics class open to all. “There is absolutely no criteria on age, health or gender to take part in this record,” says the fitness expert.
